Pompey Museum The Pompey Museum, dedicated to the study and interpretation of slavery, is the only museum of its kind in the region. Housed in the historic Vendue House, the original Nassau marketplace from which slaves were among the commodities sold in the 18th century, it is the ideal venue for the enlightening exhibition “A Slave Ship Speaks: The Wreck of The Henrietta Marie.” This interactive exhibit, which runs until December 2004, explores the early history of the transatlantic slave trade, recreating its triangular route from London to West Africa, the Caribbean (including The Bahamas) and the Americas. You can examine artifacts for which human lives were traded; hear the captain and crew tell their stories; visit a slave trader’s office, investigate a scale model of a slave ship; see a West African chieftain’s home; experience the trauma of trying on replica shackles; explore the ship’s archaeological recovery and much more.
Queen’s Staircase Nassau’s most visited attraction. Climb the 65 steps carved out of solid limestone by slaves in the late 18th century. This 102-foot staircase was named in honor of the 65 years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Located on Elizabeth Avenue, off Shirley Street.
New Year’s Junkanoo Parade Junkanoo, a kaleidoscope of sound and spectacle (a bit of Mardi Gras, Mummer's Parade, and ancient African tribal ritual), takes place on Bay Street January 1st starting at 1.00am. Prizes are awarded at 8.00am. The parade is a repeat of the December 26th Boxing Day Parade.

National Gallery The Inaugural National Exhibition is of particular significance for The Bahamas as it brings together the best of Bahamian art created since our Independence in 1973. Indeed, it is in keeping with the Mission of the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas which is to “collect, preserve, document and promote a National Collection of art for the benefit and education of Bahamians and the wider international audience.” This exhibition supports the artistic community by extending its audiences, and by helping to define its standards and practices.
D. Gail Saunders (Ph.D),
Chair – National Art Gallery Committee of The Bahamas
